Deakin vs. Monash Vikings
Through
blood, sweat and tears our men from both mixed teams battled on to face
Monash in what was surely to be a heart wrenching clash. With a few
words from horse before the whistle we were in the zone ready to do the
mighty Dragons proud. Starting with the ball and running into complete
darkness our settlers made us some serious yards down the field. Early
in the game our defence looked like attack with good talk from the
wingers reaching the centre. Monash was going to have to pull something
pretty majestic to breach our line and majestic is exactly what came to
mind watching Birdy and Richard get us over the line on several
occasions.
With a few tries on the board we began to perform the fundamentals of the game well in both attack and defence. Peach
the princess was unusually comfortable in the dark patches of the field
and had an immediate impact on the game. He was elusive in attack, just
as Ellwood pub car park victims described and Monash could not lay a
hand on him. Keats/3B was eager to get a try and take a leaf out of the
graceful diving Geofforay’s book only to dive 2 mitres short of what was
supposably the try line. Luckily the combination of Chez (Alex) and
Pins (Nathan) could only mean another try to the now confident Dragons.
The pace Pins showed throughout the game had Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell
talking about a career change. Not to mention Monash frequently looking
for the next interchange, fatigued from the merciless efforts of Craig
and Horse.
Half
time and the Dragon’s had only conceded one try. Horse put his hand up
and took the blame for a lack of talk in defence but we went back out
there eager to shut down Monash. Alex threw some low balls fortunately
to Geofforay the man with the best mitts and dive on the paddock.
Together they added to the tally. Bruce aka ‘U.P.’ was a workhorse on
the field all game. Reliable and showing good leadership qualities you
would say he was to the dragons what Nathan Hindmarsh is to the Eels. If
only the lady on wild panda could have seen him. With cramps settling
in on Craig and Keats they were calling on Nathan to share his calves.
Than to the joy of the men there was another miscommunication from the
Dragons, meaning next week there will be a slab of Melbourne courtesy of
our captain. 15-2 at full time we were victorious. Metaphorically as
Richard or horse would like I love the smell of napalm at Ellwood. It
was a flogging. I wish I could say the same for the blues.
Keats/3B out.

Deakin vs. Pace Dogs
Wednesday was the day we had all been waiting for, the day that all that
training on the field and all the hard work off the field finally paid off, the
first day of the winter touch season. We found ourselves surrounded by support
with the two mixed teams being delayed one more week and the ladies playing at
a later time our 10 strong outfit hit the field up against a strong and quick Pace
Dogs side with 4 debutants in big Bruce ‘geog’, quick Nathan ‘pins’ and the two
New South Wales boys Rohan ‘keats’ and Alex ‘kid’. Although Pace Dogs started
with only 5 players the Deakin side made a strong start with an impressive
first defensive set only to rebound with Geofforay linking with Birdy who put
in a step and dotted over for the first touchdown of the winter season. From
then on in things seemed to fall into place with the new boys blending in with
the more experienced players to make a class team which made the screaming fans
all the more excited! A quick flash of brilliance from Geofforay with a cheeky step
in from the side line and a delicate dive to make it 2-0 to the Deakin Dragons.
Horse also made a fabulous run off an intercept inside off our own defensive 5
meters and put himself over for his first of the season, we are expecting big
things from this boy throughout the year. By half time Deakin had run away from
Pace Dogs to a 4-0 lead. There were a few early season fumbles due to the lack
of game time, a couple of wayward passes along with a few balls bouncing off
the chest, but by this point the guys had really started to get the feel for the
ball. With everyone up and about and a few words of wisdom from captain Horse
and the wise Bec ‘i love it when Geoff dives’ French, Deakin was ready to blitz
another half. Stepping back onto the paddock that is Elwood Park, the Deakin
side was feeling fresh, but knew that they had to step it up against the Pace
Dogs who now had a full side. Seeing the new blokes Kid and Keats directing
play along with Geog and Pins a force in defence was great to watch. The Deakin players from years of past were also
standing tall with Ryan ‘Gorgeous’ rucking up strong, Mat ‘Rambo’ making holes
in the opposition defence, Richard was always in support, Geofforay bursting
through gaps and Craig racing down the sidelines. Kermit the frog was really a
stand out player for the men though, he was everywhere and regularly spotted in
the inzone putting points on the scoreboard. At full time Deakin had zipped
away to a 8-0 victory, the first of many convincing wins we will be seeing this
season. It was very good to see everyone back on the field and the new guys
making an impact, i think it is clear that this team can go far this season,
the sky is the limit. Well done boys.

Deakin Dragons vs. TOUCH UM
It
was Wednesday at 7.20pm, the girls were catching their breath from the
previous women’s game and the boys were getting pumped to kick some
butt. The game started well
with the deak kid’s scoring some awesome try’s on the right wing,
Geofforay and Chez aka Alex both drawing in the touch UM girls and
passing to Sledgie on the right wing! One of these try’s though did
result in a devastating loss for Sledgie as her beloved
skins got torn all the way up the shin. Now with a massive hole in her
clothing it was hard for Sledgie to get her head back in the game, but
the show must go on though. AND it did, miss communication saw the
‘bearded touch UM guy’ run through our defence
and both Sledgie and Keats got in each others way when trying to chase
him down. This all before, poor Bec ‘pash’ Frenchy got KO’d on our
attacking line whilst diving to make a try (luckily she was able to
recover and after a short rest come back on!) ‘Chez’
gave away a penalty and was severely warned by the ‘I don’t really no
what I’m on about REF’ to not come in so hard when rucking up the field,
ow well at least we were rucking with intensity. Speaking of, ‘white
lightning’ aka lizzie as she does, kept going
and going with Milo...rucking the ball up the park fast and skilfully,
seeing gaps in the defence and scooting through them. Horse and Richard
many a times got deak’s some good turnovers by reminding the ref and the
other team they did not make the ‘touch’
even if the ref couldn’t hear horse the first time! (who the hell cant
hear horse!). Dani and Gemma both kept up good intensity even though
they were buggered from the women’s game, both doing some great shut
down defence on the line! ..All in all it was a
great first match ending with an ‘even steven’ score of (6-6) at full
time. Can’t wait to keep improving and smash it next week! Well Done
Kids.

Deakin Dragonettes vs Touch UM
The girls were edgy and ready to go. Nerves were flying due to the
few new recruits. The old school girls were excited to be jumping on a field
with no ball hogging fella's and to play a real game of touch.
The usual 'shot gun off' occurred for newby White Lighting aka Lizzy Motteram
just to settle her nerves and to continue her pre game ritual. We started off
with a bang and showed Touch Um we were in for a competitive game. Sledge
Hammer was hammered with a tough first penalty which made us test our
defence. With French Kiss/ Pash aka Bec French talking the newbies through we
continued to surprise ourselves and on lookers. Hannah made a some great
runs on our left wing while Dani helped us ruck it up the middle, this time
with a little less snot. Miss watson took one for the team and had to sit out
due to injury we can only hope she is back asap!!! Su banger helped us rucking
and defended awesome and that before the next game we'll have to get her feet
hot and ready for some super su scooting!@! :D A Little bit of subbing confusion missed us one
try with ash having to race up the field to then be denied as she found the
correct try line. The poor calls kept coming from the reff which made lightning
strike even more. Gem took a shiner on the right wing to add another try to our
many. A bit of nerves and a bit of butter on the fingers of us girls resulted
in a few drop balls but all in all our game was a bloody awesome first one :D Signing off White Lightning

Sale Knockout Competition
In the 1970s, the famous quote of “what
happens on tour stays on tour” was coined to allow acts of depravity,
debauchery and downright silliness to stay behind close doors and within the
confines of the team. However, ask Matthew Johns, Shane Warne and poor old Nick
Riewoldt and they will tell you that this rule no longer holds true in the
modern day. In the case of the Sale Touch Footy Tournament, it is not a 17 year
old girl, the information is coming from an inside source.
Saturday started the way most touch footy
tournaments start, some wake up eager to strap on the boots, some woke up
nervous and apprehensive and some woke up a little like Charlie Sheen. For the first
time in a long time, Deakin Touch fielded a Women’s team and the team sheet
looked pretty impressive with a mixture of experience and youthful exuberance.
Taking the field for the first game, the tension was palpable with everyone
unsure of what was going to happen next. What happened will be talked about for
years and centuries to come. Deakin took the field and for the next 20 mins
went about systematically dismantling the opposition. When the ball was in
Deakin’s hands it was rucked up, using the famous words of Tony Greig, “hard
and fast” providing numerous holes in the defensive line that were picked off
with ease. This reporter strolled over to the sideline to witness a terrific
scoot from Ash “the Flash” Baldwin which was celebrated with as much class as
the play (It was a simple yet amazing celebration jig). It didn’t stop there.
Su “Stiffy” Cheong followed up with a neat little scoot herself to set up
another try. Not only was Deakin damaging with the ball but equally solid in
defence. Desperate dives were seen all over the field as well as holding a
strong line and giving the opposition very little.
When the referee looked at his watch and
blew that final whistle, Deakin left the field emphatic winners, 11-0!!! While
no one was surprised by the win, but it was more the way Deakin went about it.
This looked like a team that had played together for years and you could see
that these girls grow in confidence. All the supporters and this reporter could
do was stand aside and watch with equal amounts of awe and excitement. And
Deakin just kept on keeping on. In the following two games of the round, Deakin
continued to show tremendous amounts of skill and worked together as a well-oiled
machine. New recruits Lizzie “White Lightning” Motteram and Caitlin
“Sledgehammer” Jeffers lent their experience and blistering pace to make the defence
look downright silly and live up to their new nicknames (By the way, your
welcome). Also, Chrissy “BJ” Eckhardt showed an eagerness and willingness to
work and do all the little things right. Bec “Frenchie” French went out and
just did what she does every time she crosses that white line. Covered the
field with ease and directed the play like General Paton organising the Allied
Troops on D-Day. Danni “The Snoot Machine” Bower was an absolute workhorse.
Despite illness and later dislocating her finger, she was always in the line
ready to ruck up the ball time and time again (This reporter would like to take
this opportunity to apologise to the poor opposition player she wiped her snoot
on). Bec “Pinky” Watson was another one that suffered an injury, but did not
stop her from running on to the field and giving her all and covering up
defensive holes. Gemma “Butters” Hocart
was all over the field; rucking, scooting and working hard in defence making
sure not to give the opposition anything. At the end of the opening rounds,
Deakin won two games and their only loss came against quality opposition which
was enough to advance to the finals.
Going into the finals, the girls were in great
shape. Confidence was high and Deakin had real belief that they could advance
to the final and even thoughts of winning the tournament started to creep in.
After demolishing the opposition to advance to the grand final, these thoughts
started to look like they may turn into reality. Unfortunately, the girls were
pipped at the final post by an opposition that contained two Australian
representatives. But despite this, no one felt ashamed or disappointed. It was
an absolute pleasure to watch these girls go out and play the game with
experience beyond their years and to watch them grow in confidence with every
play of every game. Runners-up at Sale was a fantastic achievement. Hopefully,
this tournament is the spark that lights the fire which sees a Women’s team a
permanent fixture at Deakin and show the boys how the game should be played.
The early start on Sunday saw a number of
sore bodies arrive at the oval with all players in the mixed team having played
five games the previous day. However, this didn’t stop Deakin picking up where
they left off the previous day. Deakin continued to play the game and do the
little things that have been practiced at training implemented during the game.
Wraps, switches, quick dumps and scoots were all a feature of this new style.
The girls mentioned above continued to be the key lynch pin in the team and was
often the difference between the two sides, having strong girls willing to work
tirelessly. Richard “Three taps” French earned the high fives that are his
nickname by directing play and splitting the defence in half (By the way, the
less I see of this guy the better because I felt like we were conjoined twins
over the weekend). Geoff “Friend of Matt Duffie” Latham showed some tricks,
especially in defence, that he obviously learnt from his friend that plays for
Melbourne Storm, including one play that set the team alight (more on this
later). Ryan “Gorgeous” Clayton played as good as he looked. Every time he was
on the field, rucking up the ball tended to lift two or three levels (he’s not
too bad on the eyes either. I heart you Gorgeous). Scott “Money Bags” Readett
gave the team experience and was the key to straightening up the team in those
times when the team lost its way due to mental fatigue. Blake “Bacon” Readett showed
a mean step and was often involved in switching the play across the field and
making the defence look under par. He also was determined not to let an offside
player stop him from putting in this reporter for a try. Shane “Brands” Chanel
was always willing to run the ball up to the line and make sure that the
defence was always on the back foot. And how did yours truly play I hear you
ask, well…… he did alright. But any one individuals performance was
overshadowed by how well this team played like a team. Every person contributed
and showed guts and determination especially when the chips were down and the
game was tight. At the end of the pool stage, Deakin found themselves with four
wins and a tightly fought out draw. Unfortunately, fatigue caught up with the
team and they were outclassed by quality opposition. But the entire team could
be proud with the performance and leaving everything they had out on the field.
Coming away from this tournament, Deakin has found a style of play that can
match it with the best of opposition and hopefully can carry this through to
the winter season and see the new members of the club fit seamlessly into the
team.
Now for some awards.
Hard Yakka Play of the Weekend- This award
goes to the player who showed incredible toughness. There were a number of
contenders for this award including Snoot Machine Bower and Pinky Watson for
playing injured at some point during the weekend. However, the award has to go
to Flash Baldwin for, as someone eloquently put it, caressing the ground with
her face. After diving head first and suffering slight concussion she still got
up and played that game and the grand final. Despite criticism from Pinky that
she “looked like she didn’t know what she was doing and all over the place” we
still think she deserves this award.
The Matt Duffie Play of the Weekend- Again
there were a number of contenders over the weekend. However, we could not go
past one play that showed incredible determination and changed the outcome of
the game. Like it was fate, the man who wins this award is the friend of player
who this award is named after. The opposition busted Deakin’s defensive line and
looked sure to score. But then came the man with the body of an athlete, chased
him down, and dove to make the touch on the players heel. This changed the
whole outcome of the game and one of the reasons why Deakin won this game. So
to Geoff “Friend of Matt Duffie” Latham, Your Chiddy bang and pretty much
amazing.
Finally, a big thank you to Gemma, Su and Ash
for organising everything from the accommodation, food and all of the other
logistical components. Also, Bec French and Scotty for helping with uniforms
and to every single person who played over the weekend. I think we can all
agree that it was a great weekend and hopefully the start of a great winter
season for the club.
Till next time,
Horse

MATCH REPORT with Ryan Deakin Dragons VS RMIT Redbacks Semi Final- Thursday Mixed E
As
the Deakin mixed E team entered it's first and only preliminary final,
mother nature presented us with our first challenge for the night. The
heavy burst of rain during the warm up failed to break the teams focus
after an inspiring pep-talk from out coach and mentor Bec French. With
instructions to keep it 'short & sharp' to suit the greasy
conditions, we hit the field running with our clothes damp but spirits
high.
Once beaten, but not defeated by RMIT, Deakin began the
game with an unprecedented determination to prove themselves worthy of
a victory and to secure a place in the Grand Final. Early talking in
defence from Gemma and John set the precedent for the game and
'shutdown' some early switch attempts from RMIT.
Bec, Nilud and
Dani put their hands up to get us moving forward and set a structured
rucking pattern for the game. We were never left without a dummy half
for the whole game so well done on setting the example guys. Some great
lateral movement on our line from Shayne & Shane opened up RMITs
defence and let us through for our first try.
The intensity
lifted after the 'all clear' was given from the refs and lead to some
aggressive driving from RMIT. A warning from the referee settled the
tension but also afforded RMIT a scoring opportunity from a breakdown
in the Deakin defensive line.
We entered the second half tied
and determined to keep RMIT from scoring. Some inspirational 'repeat
set' defence from Caitlin and a 'try saving' trademark dive from Ash
lead the team in achieving this task. Despite repeated taunts and
attempts to slow the play from RMIT, Deakin flatly refused to play
'their game' and rebutted with structured rucking and clinical defence.
Nearing
the halfway mark of the second half, Su was rewarded for her 'scooting'
attempts with a try to take us to a 2:1 lead and shift the balance of
the game in our favour. Her speed was no match for an increasingly
exhausted RMIT defence. Some lightning quick 1,2 'buddies' from Shane
allowed your author to break the line and add an additional try to a
now 3:1 score-line.
A
seemingly premature whistle blow ended the game at 3:1 in favour of the
mighty Deakin Dragons in hard earn and much deserved victory by each
and every player. The team showed supreme confidence in each others
ability and every single player stepped up to fulfil their role within
the team. RMIT metaphorically walked away with question mark 'avatars'
floating above their heads in what will be remembered in their minds as
'the one that got away'.
Next
week we enter the Grand Final confident in ourselves and the abilities
of our team-mates, but not naive to the fact that we wont win this one
without a fight and absolute focus.
Thursday Mixed Match Report 12/8/10
Like a true mixed team, The Deakin Dragons men/boys took advantage of
our female players and made them do all the hard work. Our game plan
was simple, yet affective, placing 4 ladies in the middle with 2 blokes
on the wings. The flamboyant, aggressive, attacking moves displayed by
the females, ultimately made me (and I’m sure some of the opposition
too) feel like a girl. Gemma setting up a couple of plays, mixed with
Sue’s lighting speed allowed us to dominate the game. Bec's shooting defence razzled the opposition and Caitlins rucking got them off footed. John at times,
ran a third of the field to set up tries (while I dropped ONE of his
potential try makers). While Ryan on the other end, made fast guys seem
fat and slow, saving a try. Ultimately, our rigid defence tired our
opposition and when they fumbled we made quick gains in territory,
dictating “the game” WINNING 4-2. Celebrations however, were cut short
with no drink vouchers from the referees, Ashleigh (aka 2cans) throwing
a temper tantrum demanding several vouchers from the innocent
signing-in-table-thingy-lady. 2can’s managing to get not 1 but 3 drink
vouchers!!! -Nilud
Wednesday Mixed Match Report 21/7/10
Okie
dokie little touchies. Fear not, for I am back, equipped with my
sublime writing skills to report on the events of Wednesday July 21st.
This week I came much better prepared to take on the challenge of
concentrating through an entire 40 minute touch game (I wore my woolly
Bonds home socks), but again I do not promise that the following report
contains much accuracy. What I am fairly sure of; is that we played the
Beagles – a team we have had some good battles against throughout the
season. Because I can’t remember the order in which the tries were
scored, let’s start with who scored them: Captain Fanta Pants 2,
brother Richard also 2 and Rambo with 1. The first try of the night
(I’m fairly sure) but undoubtedly the most phenomenal came from
mind-boggling team work between Le Capitan and the new and improved
‘share and care’ Rambo. Some swish moves had Fanta Pants and Rambo free
on the wing but what happened next knocked the socks off the team –
with all the time and space in the world and the try line in his
sights, Rambo (it is advised at this time that all readers strap
themselves into their chairs) PASSED THE BALL to Fanta Pants, who was
in such shock from this unselfish act of kindness, could barely make it
over the line (but she did). But Rambo didn’t go home empty handed –
his ego remained in check when he strolled over the line late in the
game after a groovy intercept and solo effort (I’d like to pay mention
to the lady from the Beagles who valiantly chased him all the way down
the field - nice to see =]). Fanta Pants’ seconds try was a doozy – one
on one with an opposition player and looking very much cornered on the
side line; Fanta Pants did a little shimmy then bolted left, arched her
back, avoided a few more players and sprinted for the try line (clearly
took some notes from the Eibl-Manoeuvre) bringing about a huge applause
from both teams. I don’t remember anything about Richard’s two tries,
so I’ll get a little creative and YOU try and use your imagination. Try
number one: Gemma, with foal in womb, galloped (note the pun) down the
field and lost the ball. BUT, a few seconds later, through some
fantastic pressure, Deakin earned the ball back (hoorah). Pops and
Chief combined with a little 1-2 before Two-Cans came into play with a
blind switch to Izzy who passed it off to quick stepping Dorothy then
out of NO WHERE Richard has the ball – he cut’s left, he cut’s right,
he cut’s right again and flies into the air.. with a triple
somersault-double pike he lands gracefully on the try line and puts it
down (cheering occurred here). His second try involved a midget and
Lord Voldemort, but I’ll let you decide how that went. By the end of
the game the score was Deakin: 5, Beagles: 0 – so obviously a great
effort by the team. Special mention to Two-Can and Chief for some match
saving dives and Money Bag for his usual inspiring half time pep talks
and for maturely taking himself off in the heat of the battle (due to a
stinky umpire).
Bring on the finals!!

Wednesday Mixed Match Report 23/6/10
The mixed team took the field late Wednesday night with one
aim; make Watto’s match report. So let’s see how they did. After 4 minutes of
complaining about the lack of feeling in my toes, I was nice enough to actually
start paying attention to the game, and lucky I did - Captain Fanta Pants was
springing down the field like a Gazelle in the African grassland, the breeze in
her newly un-fanted hair and BAM a try to Deakin. The Brewski’s got the next
one back (not without some quick shooting from Richard; darting around like a Meerkat
on speed), and it was 1 all. Some brilliance by Izzy before half time almost
payed off but unfortunately the recently pregnant Gemma missed the pass OR the
low flying helicopter took the ball out (depending on how much you like/dislike
Gemma). But never fear I think another one of our awesome team members scored a
try – couldn’t tell you who it was, but well done. Half time and I’m going to
guess it was 2-1 going Deakin’s way. After an inspiring pep talk from ‘Money
Bag’ Deakin was raring to go for the second half and those who hadn’t made the
match report yet were as determined as ever (Sean). The Brewski’s got another
one on us and the game was tied at 2 apiece. But Ash B had a little something
in mind to get the team going – like Jessica Watson slamming into an oil
tanker, Ash B slammed into a man with the pecs of a Lion. She hit the ground
pretty hard but managed to get up and still make a solid contribution to the
rest of the game (her headache was helped by a couple of coldies post-match).
But the brilliance didn’t stop there, with the reflexes of an Ox; ‘Money Bag’
intercepted and juggled a stray Brewski pass. I’m not sure if it resulted in a
try, but let’s just say it did and Deakin was up 3-2. Sean was beginning to
make his mark at this point, like a sneaky salamander he began weaving his way
through the Brewski defence, keeping them on their toes. A little magic was
needed to bury the game. It was the perfect time for an ‘Eibl manoeuvre’. (Unfortunately
one Maddie Smooker thought it unnecessary to report on such brilliance, but for
those of you who missed it, here’s how it went – Alysha ‘Watto’ Eibl receives
the ball within Deakin’s 15, she advances forward and like a slinky fox avoids
all five opposition players by weaving, dodging and spinning. In the background
she can hear the opposition gasp and exclaim ‘how did we not touch her?!’ It
was a mystery to all except Eibl who had been keeping her slinky skills a
secret. Once she’d made it through the mass of players she streamed down the
field only to suddenly find an opposition player streaming up along side of
her. So she stopped dead in her tracks, spun around, shoved the ball in Rambo’s
chest and ran away laughing. She was too overwhelmed by her own amazing skill.
What’s even more unfortunate than the lack of reporting on this event is the
fact that our slinky Eibl is out for the rest of the season with ‘a sore foot
bone’ according to Dr. Fanta Pants.) But another try wasn’t to be. The
Brewski’s scored again and not long after the buzzer sounded and the game ended
at 3 all. However, Deakin wasn’t too discouraged by this result as they were
yet to beat/draw with the Brewski’s which showed that they have been improving
throughout the season. A job well done team and better luck next time to those
unable to make the report.
The fake Jessica Watson.
Thursday Mixed Match Report 17/6/10
After over a
week of exams it was good to get back into the swings of things and get ready
to bare the cold for another game of touch. This week we faced the Wombat’s
army looking to notch up our 4th win in a row. Due to Bec, Sue and
Caitlin not playing the girls had only one sub for the game and this meant we
all had to run our hardest all game – which we did. The match started with a
gush of tries each team scoring back to back tries in what seemed like a fast
paced start to the game. At half the match was fairly even, but the second half
was the game breaker and Deakin Dragons pulled away with great rucking and
continual forward momentum to force the opposition off their toes with our
slick ball movement and mountains of possession. Our defence stuck strong
making it hard for the Wombats to score. The match ended up a 10-5 win to the
Dragons in a very strong performance from all players. Overall it was a great
win and also special thanks to Rich, Scotty and Bec for kindly filling in for
us with a couple players missing. Great match from start to finish and well
done everyone !!!

Mixed Match Report 9/6/10 It
was a long and tough recovery required from the Deakin Tigers from a
big night out on Friday after training. A few sore heads and a couple
weak stomachs were suffered on Saturday morning but come Wednesday
night the team was very prepared for the challenge ahead of them. We
faced up against the beagles, a team on the bottom of the ladder, a
team we have beaten before, but a team who have progressed immensely
and certainly not a team to be underestimated. Deakin had a slow start
to the game, but after a few sets the arrival onto the pitch of two
very strong impact players (Matty ‘Rambo’ and Geofferay) initiated the
first try as Geofferay drew two players to set up Bec as she boosted
down the sideline to touchdown for the opener. From
then tries were exchange between the two sides as the beagles scored
two and big Craig claimed one of his own. As half time approached the
Deakin Tigers sensed a try was needed for some momentum into the second
half and who else but the dynamic combination between Matt ‘Rambo’ and
Geofferay as Matt had the beagles defence flat footed, he pulled out a
flat pass a couple meters infront of Geofferay at ankle height as the
flying magician dived at full stretch to come up with an absolute
screamer that even the greats would be proud of with enough pace to
carry him over the line. As half time arrived Deakin was up 3-2 but a
stronger effort in defence was required with more communication between
the team essential to come out with the win. The second half was a very
tough and a hard fought battle, but with Bec dotting down for her
second and Houston crossing the line as well we had secured the win and
only letting the one try through in the second half. As we shook hands
with the opposition, it was clear that we came away with the win as
even though the beagles looked a bit blue they made it a great contest
and wore us out completely, so much that we nearly missed a vital
mistake on the refs scorecard. The officials had recorded the final
score as 3-4 in favour of the beagles, it was however revealed that one
of our trys were recorded for the oppositions as well as another try
that was left without being
recorded, the captain of our opposition however did not see it this way
and after long dispute it was left as a draw, a disappointing end for
the Deakin Tigers as we knew the win was ours.

Mens Match Report 9/6/10
After
a tough game last week, the Deakin Tiger Dragons had only a light
training session followed by a divine dinner and a few beverages, while
some partied through the night, others like myself felt an earlier
night was needed. Come match day we were up against the bench mark of
the comp, a team who have really set the pace. We were up for the
challenge. Approaching kick off there were a few worries that our
opposition wasn’t turning up and as our arousal levels started to drop
we began to plan a 4 on 4 match within the team, but one by one they
turned up and as soon as 4 of their players arrived, play commenced. We
only had 6 players ourselves which meant no subs just yet. Before we
knew it they had a full team and even extra players on the bench. The
first half was very tough and although we leaked a few tries we showed
strong resistance against the competitions table toppers. By half time
the Deakin Tiger Dragons were worn out as the late arrival of Shane
seemed to brighten a few spirits, this was a site for sore eyes for our
men, a set of fresh legs could really give us the advantage that we
really needed to come back. And that we did through using our numbers
and picking the gaps Craig strolled through for a glorious try and gave
us some new found hope. Our strong opposition then hit back with a try
or two and our coach made the decision to send in an impact player to
really throw off our opposition, Bec. This very bold strategy did not
pay off however and the game eventually ended as a 6 – 1 loss. Although
we didn’t come away with the win, we showed some great signs against
the top side and proved that we are a force to be messed with. With plenty to reflect on Deakin now has a
week off for the bye and will receive a well deserved rest to watch
Queensland win yet another State of Origin series.

Wednesday Night Mixed Match Report 2/6/10
This
week the mixed team went head to head with the Brewsters, who proved to
be an experienced fast paced team. Unfortunately we were defeated;
however we showed some good signs throughout the game. The rucking was
pretty good, which is a reflection of the work we’ve been putting in at
training. Our defence was another positive to take out of the game,
although 100% commitment needs to be paid when shooting, and having
faith in our teammates to do their job. All in all a great effort!
Hopefully a win next week!

Thursday Night Mixed Match Report 27/05/10
After weeks of delays, Deakin Dragons finally ran onto
the field. On Thursday night the mixed E team took on the D.S All
Stars. After many weeks of being paranoid that the opposition was going
to be 10 times bigger than her, I won’t say who (hi Bec), she finally
got over her fears. As it was a very wet Thursday night, there were a
couple of dropped balls from boths teams early and once the initial
anxiety of starting wore off, we started to show some of the skills we
have learn t at training. We scored two quick tries thanks to some
excellent rucking and great talking in defence. These tries were also
due to good ball control seeing as the field and ball were very
slippery. Nearing half time, we slowed down slightly which allowed them
to score a number of tries on the wing by running around us and by half
time it was 2-2. The second half started promisingly with a great try
due to again great rucking through the middle which opened up a number
of gaps. However not long after that, the scores were once again even .
Halfway through the second half, the ref heard the siren and called
time but no one else seemed to have heard it and it seemed a really
short half. While everyone was shaking hands, heading for drinks while
being still confused, an official came up to us and said I QUOTE “ Im
sorry I dropped the buzzer, keep playing”. Once everyone eventually got
back on the field, we only had a few minutes to score. I didn’t see it
but I think it was Ryan who scored our winning try only moment before
the second and official siren went. Seeing as it was our first game as
a team, everyone played well together and really worked well as a team.
Thanks to Richard for filling in and lets show RMIT Redbacks this week
that Deakin is the better university. Great game everyone.

On Wednesday Night the Deakin tiger dragons took on the 2Scoops?
It was a fantastic game and quite easily the best game we have played this
season and we won 5-3. Our opposition were strong, and although they are
sitting on the bottom on the ladder they played like they were somewhere near
the top. They had plenty of speed and ability; we can stand proud knowing that
they did not score any easy tries. Onto our performance, Scotty (the mouth) had
a mild disagreement with the referee that saw him get sent off, everyone
thought for good but it turned out it was only for a forced interchange. We
went try for try with them during the first 10mins, and when one of their boys
started arguing with ref, I piped up and let the referee know that he sent “the
mouth” off for less, which turned out not to be the wisest of moves. The
referee stopped the game and called both captains to the field where they were
informed that the next person to open their mouths would be sent. Thankfully
both “the mouth” and myself managed to keep our comments to ourselves for the
rest of the game. We were extremely impressive with our rucking and if we can
concentrate on that for the rest of the season, we will only improve. The talk
was good as well, but there is always room for improvement. Some stand out
performers were Hercules who managed to cross the opposition line as well as
stop them from crossing ours, Geoff was once again devastating with his strong
runs up in the middle with assistance from Scotty Craig and Myself. Once again
thanks to Ash for stepping up, if he keeps doing so well he just might find himself
a regular spot on the side. Once again congratulations to everyone for a
fantastic team effort, sorry if I forgot the other try scorers I couldn’t
remember. If we maintain the kind of effort I saw last night, we will be hard
to beat. GO
QUEENSLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )))

On Wednesday night the Deakin Tigers took on the Beagles. Since the men
had just played a fast paced game and were a bit exhausted we recruited
a couple of extra men from them so that we could have a few more subs. As
the game played out, there was some excellent rucking and attacking
which found us gaps and Deakin players leaping through them to score
magnificent trys. As the tigers work hard as a team some well-placed
wing rucking allowed for some great drawing of the Beagles players and
a few more tries snuck through. By half time we the score was a
fantastic 4-1 and although I didn’t get the chance to score, thanks to
a pass from Craig which just created that little bit of a stumble, as a
team the scoring was really well rounded. There seemed to be just
no stopping the Tigers as we managed to dive for those ankle-tapping
touches and really take charge of the game as a team. As the game
heated up and the Beagles made every effort to score, we suddenly
noticed a fallen comrade. Only Bec would manage to wind herself going
in for a dive to touch the other team, and actually get the touch and
then stop play. That's courage! Fortunately that was the only drama and
we charged on to the end finishing with a score of 7-2 to the Deakin
Tigers. A well deserved win, which showed that we had really managed to
talk and work well together as a team. Good job everyone!!

After being put through their passes last week the men's team were facing a full strength opposition and with someone missing
Ash stepped up to fill the spot and make his debut in the men's team.
The pace this week was something that we were not use too and the
opposition ran the ball quickly up the field. It was Nil all until we
exchanged tries however with a lack of defensive talk they were up on
us at half time. Our talk improved and Scooter and Scott aided with
Matt made good plays with solid work from the others which kept us in
the game. Ash made his presence felt on the line with 2 diving touches
to save a try. The opposition bunched up and run the ball switching
then moving to the wing which caught us off guard. We went down
by 3 tries in the end.
This game exposed some issues such as, lack of talk, defense and some sloppy ball handing skills.
A hard training session to come.
Cheers Adam

The men's team took off at a rocket pace in their first
outing of 2010 against the Gulls last Wednesday night in an 13-nil shellacking.
Having never played together as a team, the aptly named Tiger-Dragons
breathed fire, in the speed they scored their tries against an undermanned
opposition. Hats off to the Gulls though for giving it a good hard crack. Kudos
to those that scored throughout the match including Scotty, Matt 'Rambo'
Richards, Hercules Matt Ross, myself of course, and i believe even Princess Adam
Weiss scored on occasion. Those of you i didn't mention who scored, well done
and sorry for forgetting ya. Those who didn't score, we're expecting a big
improvement in the next game... :P But honestly, well done to everyone,
really good effort with the win. Let's try and keep 'The Streak'
alive!
See ya all Wednesday night.
Keep on touching,
Craig
